S3.E11-12 Sisko, Bashir, and Dax are accidentally sent to 21st-century San Francisco due to a transporter malfunction and must find a way back without altering the timeline. Sisko is then forced to take the place of a key historical figure on Earth in 2024 in order to preserve that timeline. In 2024, the BBC drew comparisons between the fictional depiction of homelessness in "Past Tense" and present-day reality. Stephen Pimpare, one of the people interviewed for the piece, described the episode as reflecting society's tendency to "hide the problem, rather than addressing its causes."
