14-year-old student Yoshimori Sumimura is following in the tradition that’s been passed down through the many generations of the Sumimura clan as he is the twenty-second Kekkaishi of his clan. He’s constantly fighting as well with his childhood friend and rival, Tokine Yukimura, who is also a Kekkaishi, over who is the rightful heir to the powerful Kekkai Techniques. Yukimura and Tokine have been using their special powers and abilities to protect people from danger by battling the forces of evil appearing at night. From these ongoing battles, Yukimura has become stronger.

When shy Chiyo Sakura confesses her feelings to her classroom crush Nozaki, he misunderstands and gives her a job as his assistant, as he’s secretly a manga artist who publishes under a popular female pen name. It’s not a date, but Chiyo accepts as she can get closer to him. When Nozaki realizes how useful Chiyo can be in figuring out what girls find romantic, he spends even more time with her researching for his manga, but remains totally clueless about her true feelings for him, while Chiyo's extreme shyness keeps ruining her attempts to confess her feelings.

A seemingly ordinary boy named Sōya Kuroi gets caught up in a conflict between seven heroes and a group of extraterrestrial creatures. Sōya, who lives with a talking cat-like creature and a maid, discovers he's an unwitting pawn in an interstellar war when the heroes, who are also powerful weapons, begin fighting the creatures. He's forced to fight alongside the creatures against the heroes, discovering his own hidden abilities in the process.

Their father Hohenheim, a noted and very gifted alchemist, abandoned his family while the boys were still young. While in Trisha's care, Ed and Al began to show an affinity for alchemy and became curious about its secrets. However, when Trisha died of a lingering illness, they were cared for by their elderly neighbor Pinako Rockbell and her granddaughter Winry Rockbell, the boys' closest friend. Ed and Al traveled the world to advance their alchemic training under teacher Izumi Curtis. Upon returning home, the brothers desperately decide to try to bring their mother back to life with alchemy. However, human transmutation is a serious alchemical taboo, as it is impossible to do so properly. In the failed transmutation, Al's body is completely disintegrated, and Ed loses his left leg. In a last attempt to keep his brother alive, Ed sacrifices his right arm to return Al's soul and binds it to a nearby suit of armor.
