Considered by many to be one of the greatest homages to Star Trek ever made, (and is considered a better “Star Trek” film than Into Darkness as voted by fans at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas): The alumni cast of a canceled science fiction television series have to play their roles as the real thing when an innocent alien species, who saw their heroism as historical records, needs their help against a reptilian warlord who threatens to exterminate them.

(1987-1994, Starring Sir Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Lavar Burton, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, and Wil Wheaton; TV-PG)
S5.E17 Riker enters into a dangerous liaison with a member of the androgynous J'naii race, who considers herself to only have one gender, a crime in J'naii society. Since its inception, Star Trek has pushed boundaries by tackling profoundly important human issues—racism, diversity, capitalism, and more. "The Outcast" was intended to be the episode that finally acknowledged non-heterosexual relationships. Before his death, franchise creator Gene Roddenberry had expressed support for including LGBTQ+ characters in the series. While no such characters ever officially joined the main cast, this episode was designed as commentary on sexual-identity-based prejudice. Upon release, it proved divisive—even within the LGBTQ+ community itself.

Sisko is then forced to take the place of a key historical figure on Earth in 2024 in order to preserve that timeline. In 2024, the BBC drew comparisons between the fictional depiction of homelessness in "Past Tense" and present-day reality. Stephen Pimpare, one of the people interviewed for the piece, described the episode as reflecting society's tendency to "hide the problem, rather than addressing its causes."

This episode was nominated for a Hugo Award for best Dramatic Presentation and was popular enough to receive a follow-up in the Animated series, and was the foundation for Deep Space Nine to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Star Trek with “Trials and Tribble-ations”. S5.E6 A Klingon spy takes the Defiant back in time to plant an exploding tribble on the original starship Enterprise; the crew must foil the plot without arousing the suspicions of the original Enterprise's crew. This episode was crafted 30 years ago to help celebrate Star Trek's 30th anniversary. Made using rescanned Original Series footage and the same digital integration technology used in Forrest Gump, it was considered the most expensive hour of television ever made at the time. Paramount also promoted the episode by arranging for roughly 250,000 tribbles to be placed in subways and buses across the United States.
